Camp Defiance
Near Rockville, Maryland

My dear mother,

I will now send a few lines to you to let you know that I am alive and well.

I joined the regiment at Bulls Run, Va. just after the battle. I left Mike Gerred at the National [Hospital in Baltimore] doing well. There is not much to write about. Our regiment has been whipped every time they fought.

I got the letter you and Jim wrote and so did Ben.

We are now about 20 miles from Washington up the Potomac. Ben [Edy] is not very well. He is nearly wore out. He don’t carry his gun and there ain’t a knapsack in the regiment. There is no more to write at present so goodbye for this time from, — E. M. Whipple

to his mother
