My Dear Mother,

I will now try to pen a few lines to you to let you know that I am in good health and spirits and hope you are the same. I am going to the regiment for the purpose of getting my pay and discharge so that I can come home once more. I am in a great hurry as we are going. They boys are getting ready and so must I. So goodbye for this time. Don’t write till you hear from me again. — Ed Whipple

P. S. I got the money (10) all right. Ten dollars. — Ed
