December 4th 1863
I will now try to write a line to let you know that I am alive and kicking but with a bullet hole in my right shoulder. The bone is slightly broken but the Dr. says I will not lose the use of my arm. It was done the 24th ult. in the charge on Lookout Mountain. I can get a furlough if you want me to but it will cost quite a pile to come home. Write to me and tell me if I shall come.
