Erie City, Pennsylvania
January 31st 1865

Dear Mother,

I have got to go to New York City for duty as our office has been drawn in and there will be no more recruiting in the City of Erie. I don’t think I shall be gone long for I shall be discharged before I have been there long. I must go in the morning. Mother, I want you to use my wife well while I am gone for she is as good a girl as ever lived.

But it is getting dark so I must close for now. Your son, — Ed Whipple
