My dear mother,

It is with pleasure that I now try to pen a few lines to you to let you know that I am well and hope you are the same. I hain’t much time so I can’t write much this time. I got the tobacco and stamps last night and am very much obliged to you.

I am on guard today at brigade headquarters. It is a good place to stand. There is no news and I hain’t any more time for the corporal is waiting for me to go on post. Mike [Gerred] is Corporal of the Guard today.

So goodbye, — Ed Whipple
