Aquia Landing, Va.
March 1st [1863]

My dear mother,

I now sit down to answer yours of the 22nd ult. which I have just received tonight. Well mother, I have been to work all day down at the Landing  handling lumber and have just got back to the tent and found your letter laying on my bed. Well, you want to know how I found my box. When I get it, I will tell you how it is but as I have not got it yet, I can’t tell what shape it is in. I will send the receipt and then you can do what you think best with it.

Well, I will bring this to a close for this time. So goodbye.

— Ed Whipple, Co. C, 111th Regt. Pa. Vols

P. S. I wish you would send a half dollar or a dollar to buy paper with and some other little necessaries in the next.
